Most people seem to agree that the Kindle 2 and the DX are the top choices for ebook readers. For good reason! It is available in 2 current models that are both amazing. They feature electronic or e-ink display technology. The screen has no glare and no back lighting, and features 16 levels of gray scale for beautiful, sharp images. Looking at the screen is not at all like looking at a computer monitor. It actually has the appearance of printed paper. They stay cool to the touch, as well. When reading one, you will soon forget you are using an ebook reader at all!

A big advantage of the Kindle models is the connection to and support from Amazon. You can download books in 60 seconds wirelessly, for free, from a selection of 400,000 books, plus magazines, blogs and newspapers. Visit Wikipedia and other text-based sites, or email documents and images to your reader to display on-the-go. They will also play audio books, and their text-to-speech feature will read English text out loud.

Which Kindle is right for you?

There are several key differences between the Kindle 2 and the higher end DX. The screen size on the DX is a 9.7″ diagonal, where as the 2 is a 6″ diagonal. The DX stores up to 3,500 books, as opposed to 1,500. The display on the DX will rotate from horizontal to vertical automatically. The display on the the lower version requires manual rotation. The increased size, memory, and automatic screen rotation command a higher price, with the DX retailing for $489.00 and the Kindle 2 retailing for $259.00.

They are both excellent devices. If you need more storage, and a larger screen is important to you, go for the DX. If not, the 2 is probably perfect for you, and you might as well save a few hundred dollars.

Get a Nook from Barnes and Noble

Have you considered the Nook? It’s another up and coming portable ebook reader. In fact, it was voted “best new gadget of 2009″ at the TechCrunch Crunchies Awards! It has a color, touch screen, free 3G wireless capability, and access to over 1,000,000 titles. I have to admit, the Nook intrigues us almost as much as the Kindle!

More options

Kindles and Nooks aren’t the only great electronic book readers available. There are actually quite a few readers on the market.

Another popular choice is from Sony. The Sony Digital Reader Touch Edition – PRS600RC is very well rated. It has one really big advantage – a touch screen. How cool is it flip a page with the flick of a finger?

On the lower end of the well rated digital readers, you will find the Astak 5-inch Pocket Pro EZ Reader. If you are looking for a basic reader, that is excellent at handling multiple file formats, this may be the choice for you. The big disadvantage of the Astak is its lack of wireless connectivity. You will need a USB connection to download.

Are you looking for more options? Amazon sells most of the ebook readers available. You can find them here at the Amazon Electronic Center.
